Police have named an eight-year-old boy who died after being shot on a farm in Cumbria.

Jay Cartmell of Frizington, West Cumbria, suffered serious head injuries on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop, on Saturday.

Police said at the weekend they responded after receiving “a report that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm” and that the North West Ambulance Service also attended.

Jay was taken to hospital by air ambulance but died later.

Officers arrested a man in his 60s at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH.

He was taken into police custody and arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, but later released on bail.

In an update on Monday, Cumbria Police said: “As officers continue with their enquiries into this incident, they are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.”
