A fire has broken out at Blackpool Tower, with video showing flames at the top of the iconic structure.

Firefighters in climbing gear are “on their way up”, according to a tourist information page, as high winds continue to hit the seaside resort.

In a statement Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service said: “We have six fire engines, the drone team and the rope rescue team currently in attendance at a fire on Promenade, Blackpool.

“Please stay away from the area. The drone team are in operation so please do not fly drones in the area as you may obstruct emergency operations.”

Pictures and video on social media appear to show flames near the top of the giant metal structure.

A number of people were reportedly evacuated.

The fire service warned of “significant disruption” in the area as they deal with the blaze at the 19th-Century tourist attraction.

Blackpool Tower opened to the public in 1894 and stands some 518 feet (158 metres) high.
